How Online Platforms like Etsy are Helping Small Businesses Pivot During COVID-19

Etsy is an online global marketplace for unique and creative goods. Consumers have seen an increase of small businesses turn to ecommerce, like Etsy, through COVID-19 to sell their products without a brick-and-mortar business and through social distancing.

Pathway debuted the first Etsy Cohort with Conexión Américas in April 2020 to offer 5 weeks of coaching to help small business owners get up and running on the platform. Facilitated by a local entrepreneur and Etsy shop owner, entrepreneurs learned how to adapt their business models for online sales and turn their side hustles into realities. The cohort shared tools and policies, pricing strategies, best practices, photography tips and more.

Pathway WBC client Ubi Garner, owner of Utopia I’AM/Tee Apparel, shared that she was able to identify ways to improve her existing Etsy shop through the cohort!

As a crafter since 2008 with a very small customer base for her custom T-shirts, she decided to dive in full-time in April of 2019. When sales slowed down during COVID-19, Ubi registered for the Etsy Cohort to grow her business.

“I had several aha moments during the Etsy Cohort, but the ones that stand are the importance of SEO and pricing.”

Following the cohort, Ubi saw a boost into her sales.

The next Etsy Cohort begins September 29.
