May 8, 2015 – Pathway Women’s Business Center hosted its first Power Surge event featuring Board of Advisors member, Rachel Schaffer, a local attorney and her mother, Patricia, an IT data consultant from New York. The Power Surge series gives attendees the opportunity to have great, uninterrupted conversations with successful women. This will be an on-going monthly series offered by the Pathway Women’s Business Center.
With 20 in attendance, the conversation was electric as the group discussed what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur across generations and geographies. The entrepreneurial spirit is strong in the Schaffer household, and was on display as both women candidly discussed making proactive decisions and taking risks to become successful business owners.
Patricia, discussed how in the early days of her career in engineering and technology, her male counterparts didn’t know how to work with women. As she was impacted by decisions made by those around her, Patricia decided to take control of her own career. “I didn’t want to be in a position where somebody made decisions for me.” Today, she has 10 employees and provides data consulting and IT management services to businesses across New York.
At age 15, Rachel knew she wanted to be a lawyer. By age 26, she was a practicing attorney. But she wasn’t getting the experience she wanted. “Why am I waiting for anyone to let me do it,” said Rachel. In 2011, Rachel stopped waiting for someone to let her move ahead and founded Schaffer Law Firm, PLLC. Located in Edgehill Village, Schaffer Law Firm is dedicated to realizing the needs of startup and small businesses.
It was an engaging conversation and a great way to kick off this monthly event series. Thanks to all who participated – we’ll look forward to seeing you again!
