May 7, 2015 – The Nashville Chamber of Commerce and their BizStudio program hosted the inaugural Small Business Forum at the Cordelle – a formerly abandoned building beautifully renovated into an event space with the assistance of Nashville’s Small Business Incentive Program.

With over 150 in attendance, the event discussed local grants, business certification assistance, and education designed to increase a businesses’ preparedness to compete for opportunities in Nashville and beyond.

In his opening remarks, Mayor Karl Dean said “Government doesn’t create jobs – you [the small business community] do. Our goal is to make it easier and faster for you to do that.” The Mayor’s Administration has emphasized improving economic opportunities for small, minority, women, and veteran-owned businesses.

One program, Nashville’s Small Business Incentive Program, was discussed by Councilman Jerry Maynard. The program is funded at $1 million for 2015, and offers cash incentives for small business job creation and grants to support the rehabilitation of blighted buildings.

To date, only four businesses have taken advantage of this program.

Councilman Maynard said, “Everyone should have the opportunity to live the American Dream in Nashville.”  And with innovative programming and collaboration between service providers, we are on our way to achieving that goal.
