3 Career-Boosting Reasons to Become a Mentor

Pathway WBC is dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and supporting them on their journey to small business success – but we can’t do it alone! We need volunteers like you to join our mentoring program to support our members while they launch or grow a business.

But first, a quote from Denzel. “Show me a successful individual and I’ll show you someone who had real positive influences in his or her life. I don’t care what you do for a living—if you do it well I’m sure there was someone cheering you on or showing the way. A mentor.” — Denzel Washington

We’re looking for professionals who can volunteer as Pathway WBC mentors for both short-term project support and for longer-term strategy development in all fields of expertise: negotiating, marketing, accounting, advertising, and most other fields you can imagine. Becoming a mentor doesn’t just benefit the small business owners you’ll be helping and make you feel good, though. It’s good for your career, too.

Here are 3 benefits of becoming a mentor:

  1. Practice becoming an expert. We’ve all heard it takes 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to become an expert in almost anything and one of the very best ways to learn is to teach someone else.
  2. Expand your professional network. The opportunity to build rapport with individuals to help them reach their goals is well worth any persons time. Mentoring helps you expand your network and it does so in a way that is focused on quality relationships. You can have quantity and your quality too. Win, win!
  3. Strengthen your leadership style. According to the Harvard Business Review, “the best leaders practice a form of leadership that is less about creating followers and more about creating other leaders.”
