Lisa O’Dell of the Nashville chapter of SCORE knows the importance of using videos on your website and in social media. Over 40 small business owners gathered over lunch at Pathway Lending to learn how they can create professional videos without breaking the bank.
“Video helps you tell a story”, explains Lisa. “People don’t want to be sold to anymore so telling your story will inspire them to learn more about your product or service.” But video can be expensive, especially for small businesses and this class was full of tips to create high quality videos on a budget.
Hot tips for video must haves when using your smartphone to record a video
- Simple message
- Good sound quality
- Excellent lighting
- Correct format (portrait outperforms landscape on almost all platforms)
- Grab attention within the first 3 seconds
- Add call to action
- Use titles and descriptions for each platform.
As you prepare to start creating video with your smart phone, Lisa created a list of equipment that every DIYer needs to be successful. This list comes in under $140 and everything can be found online. You’ll need:
- Microphone with an adapter for smartphone cameras
- 3.5 mm headphone jack adapter dongle for your phone
- Tripod adapter cell phone holder
- Portable DSLR camera tripod with a carry bag
- Softbox flash light lighting diffuser with bulb
If you’re ready to try editing your video using free tools, Lisa recommends checking out iMovie or Windows Movie Maker. If you’ve got a little bit of money to spend, Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premier and an audience member said that Adobe Spark was a very user-friendly platform that even a novice can use. And don’t forget to use YouTube to search for DIY video tips for free. Good luck with your video creation on a budget!
